Three-Year Term Gives
World a Rest from Mossadegh
“Now I know what justice is,” the old man remarked scornfully as the court decision was announced.
We doubt that he does. Three years is certainly a light penalty for treason. It was given him because of his age and because the Shah he was accused of trying to overthrow urged leniency, although the court said the sentence should have been death.
Did Mossadegh expect a reward for bringing his country to the brink of financial ruin through his virtual nullification of the country’s greatest natural resource by nationalizing the oil industry and forcing the British to withdraw, shutting down the world’s largest oil refinery?
One thing the world can be thankful for—three years of solitary confinement will put a welcome crimp in the flow of Dr. Mossadegh’s erratic oratory and provide general benefits by giving Iran a chance to recover from the effects of his disastrous policies.
