Yet another biting editorial from the ever-cynical Buffalo Courier-Express (Buffalo, New York) newspaper. Note the deliberately misleading headline, belied by the second sentence in the editorial.
Iran Suppresses U.S. Centers
as Thanks for U.S. Aid
True, the order includes British and Russian cultural centers outside the Iranian capital, but allegations by the followers of Premier Mohammed Mossadegh that the facilities of the United States as well as the other two nations in Iran constitute “espionage nests” come poorly from a country which has just been allotted $24,000,000 under the American Point Four program for aid to backward areas.
We’re used to having our information and other agencies shut down in countries behind the Iron Curtain, but not in countries to which we are trying to be of constructive assistance.
As chief executive of a backward country, Premier Mossadegh seems equally backward in producing the common courtesy usually associated with the recipient of a generous gift. He may find out that the United States can be a bit backward, too, about extending further aid where appreciation is so conspicuously absent.
