Ms. Ann Thayer had her own column in The Daily Illini, “a student newspaper written, edited and published by undergraduate and graduate students” of the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (UIUC). The column spotlighted her short, humorous poems about various topics. According to U.S. Census records, Thayer was born in 1935, which would make her a college freshman at the time. This piece from Tuesday, November 17, 1953 refers to the military trial of the former Iranian Prime Minister.

Mossadegh puts on a show,
And swears and threatens till he’s blue,
But, like the Shah some months ago,
He wishes he had flew the coup.
But since he had no place to fly,
He’d prob’ly like to hide instead,
And if he doesn’t want to die,
Perhaps he should have stood in bed.
