When Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump began using We Are the Champions as a theme song at his political rallies earlier this year, Queen publicly and repeatedly complained, asking that his campaign cease using their music altogether. Characteristically defiant, when Trump took the stage at the opening day of the Republican National Convention on July 18th, he walked out to the sounds of the late Freddie Mercury singing “No time for losers, ‘cause we are the champions....”
Now the Queen organization has once again been forced to voice their objection at the unauthorized use of their anthemic 1977 rock classic. The Trump team was apparently either ignorant or oblivious to the fact that guitarist Brian May, a vegan animal rights activist and political progressive who enthusiastically supported Labor Leader Jeremy Corbyn, deeply deplores Trump, “a very selfish man”.
Ironically, back in January 2011, May actually approved the use of Queen’s music for anti-Trump purposes!
Although the bombastic and braggadocious Trump obviously identified with the triumphant tone of We Are the Champions, there are numerous other songs which would have been far more appropriate for the GOP contender.
