Iran Oil Crisis
Editor: The British and American oil interests in Iran are standing firm and if they do not give in on their position, we may see another world war. We overlook the Iranian people who have been stirred up by their new leaders, and they are backing their present rulers, in order to get more money for their oil.
The British state that they have a legal contract, but the contract was drawn up when the rulers of Iran were unduly influenced years ago by British money and the people remained in a substandard existence of poverty, while the leaders lived in fabulous luxury.
The people in Iran have heard the Voice of America explaining our form of government, and mentioning our relatively high standard of living for the average American worker. They certainly have talked to and seen American workers over there, and therefore would like to better their own economic well being; as we Americans have done through labor organizations, and also because our employers know that a well paid worker turns out more work; and the employers have not begrudged a rightful request for better conditions and more money.
Now the revolution is evolving and the people in the Near East and Middle East are watching our reactions as they prepare to throw Britain out, if the British do not obey their demands and draw up a more liberal contract for the benefit of the Iranian people and not for the few corrupt leaders as in the past.
Will we back up the British and disregard the voice of the people in Iran?
—ED HANLY.
