The Times Record, an independent newspaper in Troy, New York, took notice of the swift White House approval of the new military coup regime in Iran in their Friday evening editorial.
“SINCERE FELICITATIONS”
The President of the United States [Dwight D. Eisenhower] has offered “sincere felicitations” to the Shah of Persia on the return of the ruler to his palace in Tehran. It is evident that Washington views the restoration of a freer state, after the threat of a dictatorship by [ex-Prime Minister] Mossadegh, as a distinct benefit both to Iran and to the United States.Of course this may be an indication of financial aid from Washington. Iran needs help; and it is unlikely that any arrangement about its oil can be made soon enough to save it from economic collapse. If we can tide it over until the Shah gets his government going and makes sensible terms with those who can develop Persian oil we will be doing a service to Near East economy.
